THE STORY

Nestled among the eaves, this children’s retreat focuses on maintaining the magic. Here, we used light (and some well-placed chalkboard paint) to create a colorful and secret escape for little train lovers. But the real focus was building a functional and fun room for its pint-sized owner. This room is user friendly thanks to chalkboard paint, a secluded cubby that’s accessible under the desk, curtains to make adjustable hideaways, a hidden window behind the bed to spy on intruders, and a train track that meanders through the room.

I had already worked on a few projects in the house with them, so I knew I would be giving the team freedom with the kids suite. Every element of the design had our family in mind— the lower beds for the kids, the awesome reading chair for my son, the tufted headboard, a train track that runs around the room, and all kid-friendly fabrics. The painted chalkboard shapes were also part of that thinking. They even made sure we (the parents) can fit into all of the fun play spaces. It’s such an incredible place to spend time in.
